Is anyone else having trouble with their bills from HydroOne since the new Smart Meters were installed??? We have quadrupled and our neighbors bill has gone up 7-fold. We have a call into Norm Miller the MPP and have posted onto this complaint site - the more evidence, the better...see the posting here and read what a person called Shirley Noel learned...

Hi, I read the posting from Shirley Noel which you have the link to.   Although, it is not the best solution, I wondered if anyone has tried covering their smart meter so the sun will not shine on it (or is this not allowed) to see if that makes a difference or not.  Just curious.

Who do we contact about this?  We also wondered what was going on with the huge increase in our billing.  The changeover from previous years made it necessary to do a little research to figure it out, but, we were definitely significantly over-billed.

Our actual usage from Oct 15 to Jan 13 was 15 kwh per day.  Most of that time, except for a few days, we weren't here and everything was off except for heating our little storage area to 10*.  Then, under the same conditions, from only Jan 13 to Feb 11 our actual usage was 62 kwh per day !!!!  That's 4 times the usage per day under the exact same conditions!  January may be a cold month, but, not enough to make anything like that difference!

Then, the next month, under the exact same conditions and probably just as cold outside, we used 45 kwh per day!!

I intend to e-mail this info to our MPP to ask for some action.  what is everyone else doing?

Here's what you need to do - you need to get your meter tested:
    1. Contact Hydro One and ask them to send you a letter acknowledging your concerns, that you don't want to pay your bill until they test your meter, and that they cannot charge you interest for unpaid bills, and that they cannot cut off your hydro until this is resolved. Hydro One then schedules an onsite meter testing date.
    2. Contact Measurement Canada:
...and tell them your problem and they will send you forms to fill out and return, and then assign you a Case #...and they then relay info to Hydro One as well. You need to lodge your complaint with them as well as Hydro One because they audit Hydro One.
    3. Wait for the meter to be tested, and get your issues resolved.
    4. Also, you can register your issue with Ombudsman Ontario:
    5. Norm Miller is the MPP, and we were going to contact him as well but went this route instead - it seemed to be more direct:

A couple of us on the lake are already at step 3...and yes, apparently some meters are defective.

Best for everyone to proceed on their own and the more that do, the faster this will all get resolved.

    Good luck.

Here is the response which I received from Norm Miller regarding my e-mail about the smart meters.  I'm pleased that he is taking a serious approach to the problem of energy costs.  However, he does not seem to have gotten the point that my concern is more about the unreliability of the smart meters.  He did, however, pass my letter along to all the right people.

Thank you for your recent email regarding smart meters.  I appreciate receiving your comments.

I have heard from other constituents about the reliability of smart meters and the rising electricity costs.  This is a particular concern for retirees as well.

As you know beginning July 1st hydro electricity and other forms of home heating fuel, gasoline and a variety of other products will be subject to the harmonized sales tax which will mean an increase of 8% on electricity bills.  Also, the McGuinty government’s ‘Green Energy Act’ will cause energy prices to increase significantly.

I have taken the liberty of forwarding your email to the Ontario Energy Board.  As the regulator they should be aware of the impact of increases in energy rates.  I have also forwarded your letter to the CEO and President of Hydro One Networks Inc. (HONI) and the Minister of Energy so that they will be aware of the impact of the cost of energy on their customers.

When I have received a response to my correspondence on your behalf I will forward copies to you.

Thank you again for taking the time to write.
