    To all members .

    This morning I learned of a POSITIVE TEST for BLUE-GREEN ALGAE from the Simcoe Muskoka Health Unit.

    Positive result location: West side of Kahshe Lake from a sample off of Oak Road.

    I have contacted Gravenhurst Mayor Paul Kelly and they have just issued the announcement on the Town Web Site.

    At that time I also requested signs be placed at entry to the lake, which has now been ordered and also that Nagaya Beach area be closed. Further asks will be made to the town regarding the need for on going water quality testing of the Nagaya Beach area and the lake through the Town to the Simcoe Muskoka Health unit.

    Please do not drink the water and it is very important that you read the precautions set out by the Town and Simcoe Muskoka Health unit!

    Ron Pearson our Lake Stewart has added this information and plans to add more to our January Newsletter:

    The three contributors to nutrient loading where we can make a difference include:

    1. Pumping out and having our septic systems (tanks/leaching beds) inspected on a regular basis;
    2. Managing our shorelines to keep them as natural and as vegetated as possible to minimize soil erosion directly into the lake, and;
    3. Completely avoiding the use of phosphorus or nitrogen fertilizers on any existing lawns, gardens or flower beds in the vicinity of the shoreline.

    Other sources that are beyond our control include wildlife feces, rain-fall and in-flow from rivers/other lakes.

    Please see the links below for all the information available at this time.

    Update on Waste Management

    I wanted to give you an update on recent developments in Waste Management around our lake.  As you know, several of our bin sites have been identified as “High Priority” by the District of Muskoka Engineering and Public Works department and the Ministry of Environment.

    As a result of the COVID 19 emergency measures, some of these bin sites remain as they were last year:

    ·        Rockhaven

    ·        Denne’s winter site

    ·        Riley Lake

    Studies are under way by Engineering & Public Works as to how arrangements will change after the emergency measures are lifted.  Work is ongoing on these sites, but no specific measures can be identified at this time.

    Stay tuned.
    Sincerely,

    MargTaylor,
    President

    Who Will Be This Year’s Outstanding Volunteer?

    There are many wonderful people who willingly give their time and skill to help make Kahshe Lake the marvellous place that we have come to cherish and enjoy.  Each year, KLRA selects one such individual and recognizes them with the Outstanding Volunteer Award.  Traditionally, the award is presented at our Annual General Meeting, but this year we may need to make other arrangements.

    You are part of the process.  If you know someone who should be considered, why not take a moment and nominate them?  You can take a look at previous recipients and get more information on our website. To find that info, go to About/Our Work/ Committees/ COM/ Outstanding Volunteer.

    Deadline for nominations is June 14, 2020.

    KLRA members responded in large numbers to the survey started on February 16 about the District of Muskoka's plan to remove waste bin sites around Kahshe and Bass.

    The results of the survey are available here.  It makes interesting reading.

    It turns out that the bin sites planned for removal this spring are even more important than was previously thought.

    We have sent the results to District staff and politicians.  We are arranging meetings to achieve our near-term goal of keeping the bin sites until we can get an acceptable plan.

    We also asked you to complete a survey on the District’s Engage Muskoka website.  We now have learned that Gravenhurst (read Kahshe Lake) has provided more feedback than any other municipality.  Way to go, Kahshe and Bass!

    We’ll keep in touch.

    The Gravenhurst Septic Re-Inspection Program will be coming to cottages on Kahshe Lake in August this year. The Town team hopes to get this accomplished this year, but if it cannot get to all the waterfront properties, they will continue next spring.

    This is a positive program that helps keep our Lake clean.
